This ceramic sculpture transfers the texture and form of a 100 year-old redwood lumber slab, sourced from the rural California coast. The work was created by plaster casting the lumber on location during an artist residency in Humboldt County during 2023. It is part of a series that combines ceramic casts of living redwood bark and historical lumber. Redwood logging in California has a complex history rooted in the 19th century, marked by extensive harvesting and its subsequent impact on the region’s ecology.
